Sunflowers are one of the most popular blooms in the world. Their bright colors remind us of summer days and warmer temperatures. And since they come in a wide range of colors and sizes, they're perfect for any occasion.
When picturing sunflowers, most of us think of towering stems with huge flower heads. However, North America's native, wild sunflowers can be quite small. They can still reach heights of up to six feet, but have flower heads just three to four inches wide. Wild sunflowers are easy to grow in your backyard and will bring lots of beneficial pollinators to your garden. These flowers are especially popular with butterflies and hummingbirds.
The smaller size of wild sunflowers makes them ideal for delicate bouquets. The United States Postal Service pictured such an arrangement on the 2022 two-ounce-rate stamp. Paired with other colorful blooms, the design is a cheerful reminder of summer that can be enjoyed throughout the year. That makes it perfect to mail greeting cards, wedding invitations, and other heavier letters. Considering the universal appeal of sunflowers, there couldn't have been a better design choice for such a stamp.
